I gave the suds a go on my Windows XP Pro box two weeks ago. I've got all sorts of stuff on this install and figured that if Registry Booster was as good as it said it was, my nearly four minute boot up time and lingering issues would have to be fixed. But truth is, I was nervous 'cause, you know, my life's also on this computer and if your registry stops working, so does your computer. But Uniblue told me to fear not as it was safe to use and it even makes a complete backup of your registry before it gets into dirt. So I gave it a go and off it went. I cautiously let Registry Booster clean and correct the nearly 500 issues and then I rebooted my system. Oh man, what would happen? I was crossing my fingers and praying Uniblue's claim of "dramatically enhance(d) performance and maximize(d) system stability" was in fact truth and not just PR talk. After a week of working on my computer, I found no adverse affects and even noticed peppier launching of Firefox when I clicked on a link in Outlook, something that had been suffering from latency prior to the registry cleaning. As a matter of fact, some of the programs that we find and use more often than not contain unwanted adware or other annoyances. Heck, even Norton Utilities is not living up to my standards any longer. Alas, things were looking pretty grim and, for quite some time, the once-trusted utilities that I used to swear by are no longer allowed on my PC. Guess I have lost faith somewhere down the line. Well, as luck would have it, I was presented with the opportunity to review a utility suite known as jv16 PowerTools. My initial thoughts were that of reviewing 'a Norton lookalike.' However, once I really got into using its tools on my Windows PC, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike so many other programs out there, installation was very speedy and the tools being offered were actually useful. Features that I found with jv16 Power Tools include: Registry Cleaner: Designed to scan and repair those little nasties that can pile up in your registry. One thing that I found interesting about the jv16 version is that it will not try to get creative if an accurate repair can not be made. I think it is safe to say that people appreciate this. I know that I sure do. History Cleaner: Cleaning out your history tends to be one of those things that is put on the back burner. Sure, we mean to get to it eventually. But sometimes our day gets the best of us and we forget to clean it out. Speaking for myself, I have gotten into the habit of letting this automation tool take care of this for me. Simpler than what is already included with Windows, I know that it is being address whether I remember to take care of it or not. nothing quite like having that kind of peace of mind with your privacy. I installed and tested an evaluation version of Top PC Tools' Registry Cleaner on my XP Home box. Unlike Microsoft's utility, which deals only with invalid registry keys, Registry Cleaner detects and removes empty keys that lead to registry fragmentation. Here is their description: The registry can grow but it can never shrink back due to its design. When a registry entry is removed, that entry is simply marked as blank but remains in place, introducing a gap into the registry. the registry becomes more and more fragmented over time. Registry fragmentation causes overall system performance to decrease. Systems with a fragmented registry will take longer to boot and will use more memory just for processing the registry, resulting in decreased overall performance as other programs are forced to use much slower virtual memory. To test this product, I installed and ran it first to establish a baseline. It found 330 errors. The scan is very thorough and I like the format of the review list it presented. With the MS version, you have to look in the UNDO files. Next, I ran Microsoft's RegClean, fixed the errors it found, and ran Registry Cleaner again. It only found 298 errors this time, most of them either empty keys, useless file extensions, or references to other things that no longer exist - so this program is much more robust in its ability to repair the registry. Microsoft's left a bunch of things behind. I didn't bother to repair anything that Registry Cleaner found, since the evaluation version is limited to fixing 20 entries: Though Registry Cleaner will search all the invalid entries in the system registry in the unregistered version, you will be able to remove only twenty invalid entries in the unregistered version. It's an instant source of frustration. That's where a program called FolderSizes from Key Metric Software comes in. The program opens into a window with four panes - Folder Browser, Folder, Drive Space, and the File/Folder Detail Pane. Each is synchronized with the others and they're all controlled by global settings and filters that can be applied by clicking buttons on the toolbar. The Folder Browser is the normal main control pane. This is where you'll pick which drives or folders you want to explore. It's an easy navigation, because it looks just like the main tree display in Windows Explorer. If you have any network drives mapped, you'll be pleased to know that this program also allows you to manage their space, as well.
